Below is a lesson plan that I found when I was looking for some high school vocabulary building activities. The objectives for this particular lesson do not stress vocabulary (although I think it could be modified so that this element would be part of the plan), but it looks like a fun/creative way to get older students motivated to write. It also throws in a little bit of the element of humor. One might be able to adapt this for younger students if simple dialogue was the only requirement and a list of current vocabulary words were provided.

Comics Lesson
By Melissa Fennell
GRADE LEVEL: HS
SKILLS: Reading, Listening, Speaking
TIME: Class Period
MATERIALS: Sentence Unscramble Worksheet, Comics with dialogue erased
OBJECTIVES:
To increase student interest
To encourage students to use English creatively
To practice writing
PROCEDURE:
Introduction/Warm up (10 minutes)
Ask Students “Which comic character are you most like?”
Can be any character. If you know the character, you can make a comment about it (conversation). If you don’t, then you can ask the student to teach it to you.
Activity one: Sentence Unscramble (7 minutes)
Show Students a comic with the speech erased and dialogue sentences put below the comic in the wrong order. Students sort out the order of the sentences. Then, they fill in the speech bubbles.
Activity two: Make your own comic (20-30 minutes)
Students choose from a selection of different comics and fill in the (empty) speech bubbles with their own conversation.
Activity three: Presentation (10 minutes)
In groups, Students exchange comics and read them
