This Thursday, April 26th is "Poem in Your Pocket" day. It is a day in which one can celebrate Poetry Month (April) by carrying a favorite poem, or any kind of poem, in your pocket and read it to friends throughout the day. My secretary and I made a contest, for the students, out of this day. The winner and the runner up will be announced on "Poem in Your Pocket" day. The prizes were a BIG incentive for the high school students, but I think they enjoyed the activity too! I heard them asking one another if they had turned in their poem for "Poem in your Pocket"...That's a sign! We had 40 poems turned in!!! That's pretty amazing for high school kids to do this time of year! We had entries from all grade levels. The poems were judged, last night, by members of the Appalachian Center for writers and poets (Abingdon). Poems will be posted on the bulletin board outside the library (names on the back) and the students are invited to read their poems at an "open mic." held at Zazzy'z (coffee shop) in Abingdon on Friday April 27th. Actually, the open mic. is the last Friday of every month, 6pm to 8pm, at Zazzy'z on Main St. in Abingdon. You all are invited to read or just come and listen. The kids are waiting, in anticipation, to see who the winner and the runner up is!
