Objectives:
1.Students will be able to name subject headings found in at least 1 of the Dewey decimal system classification areas.
2.Students will use the Tagxedo app. to manipulate text.
3.Students create a “word cloud” using Tagxedo
4.Students will present their “word Cloud” to the class pointing out subject headings found in the corresponding classification area.
Tagxedo is a word cloud generator. This online application can be used to create visually stunning word clouds in several different ways. We will do this by typing text into a field and then manipulating the text using Tagxedo.
I will do a demonstration of how Tagxedo works using an LCD projector. In order to do this, students will provide me with “Dewey” subject headings using a classification refresher sheet provided. After the demonstration and any questions have been answered students will be divided into 10 groups of 2-3. Each will be given one laptop and a paper pad with pen. These groups will be directed to one of the 10 Dewey decimal classification shelving areas in the library. The students will then do the following:
Examine the section that they have been assigned to and determine at least six words to tag the different subject headings found in their specific “Dewey” area.
Write subject words, classification numbers and any other information pertinent to their section (book titles…) on the paper pad provided.
Type this text into Tagxedo and manipulate it to create an original word cloud.
Present their word cloud to the class (using an overhead projector).
Classmates will name subject headings from the word cloud and its corresponding Dewey decimal classification number (000-999)
Evaluation:
Presentations will be evaluated on accuracy of subject headings as they correspond to the call numbers and originality of word cloud.
Also, students will choose one book from a table of pre-selected books (hopefully topics of high interest). There will be several books from each of the 10 main Dewey subject areas. When they check it out, they will name the subject and general call number associated with that book (the actual call number will be covered). If they respond correctly, they can then check out their book, If not, they will get 2 more chances to check out a book. Three strikes and I have struck out and need to re-evaluate this lesson with the students!!! All students will have a chance to check out any fiction book of their choice along with the non-fiction (subject) book.
